The strong economic
growth in Vietnam over the past decade has resulted in substantial demand
for electricity throughout the country. Area like southern Vietnam
provinces’ annual electricity consumption growth on the average at 13.4%
and expected to increase from 24-42% from 2020-2050. To cope with the huge
demand, Vietnam will build additional 74 power plants, including 48
hydroelectric, 17 coal-fired, 5 gas-fired, 2 nuclear, and 2 renewable
power plants with a total investment of around US$ 5.0 billion per year.
Demand For Industry & Consumer Electric Appliance
Increase
Other than building more power plants, power distribution and
transmission infrastructure, the demand for industry and consumer electric
consumption appliances in Vietnam is also increasing. Due to Vietnam’s
rapid economic development grew nearly 8.5 percent in 2007. In 2008,
Vietnam’s electricity consumption up to 77 billion kWh, as the result the
Vietnam southern regions has a higher demand for electricity consumption.
Demand for Industry Electric System Increase - The expansion of
commercial and industrial center like office building, hotels, and
infrastructure projects drive the sharp increase in demand for different
type of industry appliances like air conditioning systems, security &
alarm system, PA system, lighting and switchgear systems etc. Besides, in
order to secure the stability of the power supply for enhancing the
competitive advantages of the enterprises, the demand for diesel power
generator also increasing. Because of this, Vietnam needs to import lots
of related facilities and equipments from overseas.
Current power shortages have had serious effects on the local business,
commercial and industrial. In some provinces, power has been cut every 3-4
days a week. Locals are rushing to buy electricity generators, as country
will be continues to suffer from a shortage of electricity through 2020.
Vietnam’s electricity generators market had seen sales rise 40% - 50% over
last year.
Demand for Consumer Electric Appliance Increase - As the general
income of Vietnam citizens is increasing; people are willing to spending
more money for upgrading their living standard; the demand for good
quality consumer electric appliances also increasing. Besides, being the
member of World Trade Organization (WTO), Vietnam is opening up its
consumer electric appliance market by lowering the import tariff from 40%
- 50% to 0% - 5% now.
Due to the strong demand, the import of industry electric systems and
consumer electric appliances is raising in Vietnam. It is a good business
opportunity for all international equipment suppliers, to bring their
products and technologies for the Vietnam’s industrial, commercial,
residential and marine electricity market.
Coal-fired power:
total capacity in 2010 is expected to be 4400 MW. The economy still
requires more 4500-5500 MW (basic plan), 8000-10000 MW (master plan) in
the period 2011-2020.
Gas thermal power:
Total capacity in 2010 is expected to be 7000 MW. The economy still
requires more 3500 MW, or 7000 MW in 2011-2020 if more gas resources are
explored.
Prospect of
building nuclear power plants
Even though the first 2000 MW nuclear power plan in Vietnam is expected to
be built and operated after 2015, this is very vague due to the lack of
advanced technology and capital, the human resource and the opposition of
people. |
